We asked the owner Julie Tee to tell us about La Germondiere the France Fishing Gites and this is what she wrote.

Surrounded by glorious countryside, set amongst the peaceful apple orchards, yet not far from a town with a supermarket, local shopping, somewhere to eat and enjoy a glass of wine, and even a pizza takeaway!  If peace and tranquillity are what you are searching for, simply follow the traffic-free roads directly to our little corner of paradise in Secondigny, in the Deux-Sèvres, Poitou-Charentes.  (North of Niort, south of Bressuire, west of Parthenay if you can’t find our village on a map).

In our small hamlet of just 4 properties, La Germondiere, we offer two traditional self-catering properties – which have been sympathetically converted from an old farm barn.  Rustic, with oak beams and tiled floors, the gîtes are fully equipped for your holiday with essential modernity such as Wi-fi and English TV.  Each gîte has an enclosed garden, complete with sun-beds, patio furniture and BBQ, but best of all, we have two stunning private fishing lakes, surrounded by mature trees, wild flowers, water irises and bulrushes, which attract an abundance of wildlife.

For anglers, you have the choice of our smaller coarse lake which is stocked with a variety of fish, or our larger lake which is home to some beautiful specimen carp (up to 34lbs).  Fishing is free when you book your holidays with us, although we do ask you to respect our rules, which are essential to the health of our fish.

Even if you don’t fish... there are plenty of spots around the lake where you can just sit back, relax and unwind from day-to-day life.  Have a picnic (we provide a picnic blanket).  Watch the birds, listen to the frogs, wait for the kingfisher, observe the variety of dragon and damsel flies that are drawn to the water.  Read a few books (there are plenty of English books available).  Drink wine (we have an excellent wine cave in our local village, so you can stock up before you go back home).  We can also guide you to local producers for goat’s cheese, honey, foie gras – whatever French fancies you wish to take home with you.  If you are not afraid to speak the lingo, you can arrange for one of our local bakers to deliver your daily baguette and croissants.

Gite de la Prairie sleeps 2 people (but can accommodate 4 with the sofa-bed on the mezzanine).

Gite de l’Etang sleeps 4 people (but can accommodate 6 with the sofa-bed in the lounge).  It is all on one level, so can accommodate customers who cannot cope with steps or stairs.

A car is essential for you to explore the many possibilities for sightseeing within the region (and if you are bringing your fishing gear!)  An hour’s drive in either direction will certainly cover a good number of tourist attractions.

It also means you can bring your dog (but please keep him indoors, in the garden or on a lead when we let our chickens out to free range).  We have two dogs of our own, and know how hard it is to leave your faithful friend behind.  We have an English speaking vet in the village, so can help you with the necessities of pet travel.

The drive may be long (if you come from Calais or Dunkirk – between 6 to 7.5 hours, especially on a Saturday in high season).  But we can promise you it is worth it – 99% of our customers come by car.

More than 65% of our business is repeat.  We get booked up quite far in advance, particularly for dates in May through to August, yet often have availability at low prices outside of those months.  With discounted ferry offers, or flight and car hire offers, perhaps consider a week or short-break in the winter or autumn.  We personally prefer to take a trip to the coast or to the port at La Rochelle in these months.  Or perhaps take a drive over to the Isle de Ré for lunch – a charming Island which is often packed with tourists during the summer months!

We do also have permission for camping – without facilities.  We can provide you with somewhere to empty your chemical toilet (eco-products only please) and fill up with water.  So if you have a caravan or motor-home, and are looking for a stopover on your journey through France – give us a call to see if we can accommodate you.

We are around 650 km from Calais ferry port and the Eurotunnel, around 425 km from Le Havre and around 380 km from Caen.  Our properties are advertised with Holiday France Direct – booking through them gives you discount to Brittany Ferries crossings.

The route most commonly followed is Rouen (if crossing at Calais), Le Mans, Angers, Cholet, Secondigny.

Our nearest airports are Poitiers (64km - about 1 hour driving time) and La Rochelle (118km - about 1 hr 20 mins driving time).  Nantes Atlantique International airport is 134km away, yet the drive is only around 1 hr 30 – there is a new fast road between Cholet and Bressuire which makes this route much quicker than previously.  Car hire is available at all of these airports.

Visit our website for more information about the gîtes and lakes, our fish and wildlife, and also for an extensive list of things to do and see.  You will find all the prices listed there too, and a link to our availability calendar.

We sincerely look forward to hearing from you and welcoming you to our ‘petit coin de paradis’.

Finally

I work very hard on this website!

Can you do me a quick favour in return for providing this free information? I'd really be grateful if you told Twitter, Facebook or Google + that you appreciate my efforts!
