We asked the owner Ruth Trevanion to tell us about the "Little Cottage" and this is what she told us.
Little Cottage France is a self-catering holiday cottage, situated in a rural farming location near the pretty village of Sommieres du Clain in the Vienne region of Poitou-Charente.
It’s about a 6 hour drive from the Brittany or Calais Ferry Ports and Shuttle, in a region with abundant local attractions and days out. The majority of the journey is by motorway, with most people travelling from Calais (on the A28, A13 and N10) via Rouen, Le Mans, Tours and Poitiers, thereby completely avoiding Paris.
For those preferring to come by plane, the nearest airports are Poitiers (around 40 Minutes), Limoges (around 1 ½ hours) or Angouleme (around an hour).
Don’t forget the option to come by train as well – take the Eurostar direct to Lille, hop in the TGV direct to Poitiers, pick up a hire car, and then it’s a lovely drive south for an hour to Little Cottage France.
There are many interesting stop-offs whichever way you choose to come, with historic cities, towns and beautiful chateaux.
The cottage itself sleeps 4 people in two double bedrooms, is dog-friendly with a large 500 square metre garden and off road parking for at least 2 vehicles. It has a gravel terrace for relaxing in the sun with a glass of wine (and located between the Loire Valley and Bordeaux, you are spoilt for choice!) or perhaps for those who prefer a glass of local Pineau or Cognac.
The cottage is fully equipped with English and French TV, 4 ring hob and oven, microwave, dishwasher, espresso/cappuccino maker, clothes washing machine, dual fuel burner (for those chillier nights) and free Wi-Fi. All linen and towels are provided.
For trips and days out, the cottage is near to the towns of Civray and Gencay with their farmers markets, pretty villages, historic sites and family attractions such as the tourist wildlife park of the Vallee des Singes, the Marais –Poitevin (known as the Venise Vert), the Charente Lakes, and near Poitiers, the theme park of Futuroscope.
The roads are generally quiet, well maintained and easy to drive on, meaning you can enjoy the scenery as well as the experience of driving in this unspoilt area of France.
Every year, the city of Angouleme, a pleasant hour’s drive south, holds the world famous Circuit Race of its ramparts, the only race where the circuit has remained unchanged since it’s inauguration in 1939!
The cottage is also only 35 minutes from the Circuit du Val de Vienne, a 4km race circuit which holds a series of car and superbike races throughout the year.
For history lovers, this is the land of Charlemagne, with the wonderful ruins of Charroux Abbey, close by in the Limousin and Dordogne is the Route Richard Coeur de Lion and of course the area is abundant with reminders of Eleanor of Aquitaine.
The cities of La Rochelle (about 1hour 30 mins), Limoges and Angouleme (about 1 hour away) are all within striking distance and for lovers of the vine , Bordeaux City and St. Emillion are about 2hours away and Cognac just over 1 hour 20 minutes away.
Throughout the summer a range of events are organised across Poitou Charente from wine and food festivals to concerts, opera, jazz and music festivals as well as arts and craft markets, antiques markets, flea-markets and theatrical events.
